The Scottish Highlands

The view down to the Skye Diatomite works... Diatomite was discovered at nearby Loch Cuithir in the 1800s. It is a white clay-like deposit made up of microscopic shells of diatoms. It was processed and used as insulation around ship boilers, filtration for beer and in the production of paints, polishes and dynamite! It was heated, dried and readied for transport by boat below us here. It then went in sacks to places as far away as South Africa.
